Artist in Residence

Joaquin Segura

From 1 July until 31 August IMPAKT welcomes Mexican artist Joaquin Segura as part of the European Media Artists in Residence Exchange (EMARE).

Joaquin Segura’s diverse oeuvre meditates on violence as an omnipresent motif in contemporary life. Through his unpredictable works, Segura aims to reach an art of destabilization, elaborating a poetic of sabotage through apparently random acts of provocation, which relate to impotence, denial & deception, here and now.

During his stay in Utrecht Joaquin will work on The Aesthetics of Self-Betrayal. In this video-project he explores he notions of political change, the pertinence of insurrection and the validity of the notion of revolution in our present sociopolitical context.

His action, installation, intervention and photographic work has been extensively shown in solo & group exhibitions in Mexico, USA, Europe & Asia, in venues such as Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, White Box and apexart (New York, NY), LAXART, MoLAA (Los Angeles, CA) Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid, Spain) and the National Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow, Russia). His work has been widely reviewed and featured on major art publications & newspapers such as Flash Art, Adbusters and The Washington Post.

Segura is also a founding member & board advisor of SOMA, Mexico City.

More information on Joaquin and his work can be found on his website.
