Contemporary Sound and Image #8

sub.club #8 with Miranda July

8 March 2001
20:00 — 22:30

Location: Filmtheater ‘t Hoogt
€10-13

On 8 March 2001, Miranda July presented The Swan Tool and True Love Never Dies at Impakt as part of the eighth edition of the sub.club programme. Already known for her boundary-defying work across film, performance, and experimental media, July brought to Impakt a vivid snapshot of her multidisciplinary practice with her performance piece The Swan Tool and the video installation True love never dies.

Miranda July, 27, has a surprising and multifaceted body of work. With a background in Portland’s Riot Grrrl movement, July entered the art world at a young age. She has worked across a variety of disciplines: video, performance, and music. She is also the founder of two video labels, acts in feature films (Jesus’ Son by Alison MacLean), and is co-screenwriter of Center of the World, the forthcoming film by Wayne Wang.

Central to July’s oeuvre is a fascination with systems and codes derived from science or social interaction. She often uses these to make visible the underlying emotions, manipulative behaviour, and power dynamics within social structures. July’s work exhibits a bizarre sense of humor and a rich imagination. It alternately evokes feelings of wonder and unease.

The Swan Tool

A “live film” in which Miranda July interacted with two video projections. The protagonist, Lisa, cannot decide whether she wants to live or die, and therefore buries herself in her own backyard. The live soundtrack was performed by DJ Zac Love.
