6th August

The first Impakt AV-BBQ will take place on Saturday, August 6. The program features work by several recently graduated artists from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, as well as other video art from the Netherlands and abroad.

This evening will include, among others, work by Roiy Nitzan, who was nominated for the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Award, and by Martha Jurkewicz, who was nominated for the René Coelho Prize 2005.

From New York, Wonder Showzen by the collective PFFR will be screened. This work can best be described as an educationally irresponsible version of Sesame Street. From Belgium comes Kurt D’Haeseleer, whose work Fossilization is an apocalyptic endgame starring cars, human remains, and the fantasies of a rainy day.

In addition, many other works will be shown.

20th August

The AV-BBQ program of August 20 features a remarkable number of animals. For instance, philosophical parrots provide profound intermezzi in the computer animations of Swiss artist Yves Netzhammer. More animalistic traits can be found in the work of Arjen de Leeuw. Water seems to be the natural habitat of the characters in his film Drifting Mind.

Hester Scheurwater’s work is influenced by performance art and often has a surreal undertone. She frequently appears as an actress in her own work. In Ani(fe)mal(e), the animal and the human merge. In Chirpy by American artist John E. Goras, we see an idyllic—though no less explicit—romance between a canary and a horse. Even more love, but also frustration and suppressed anger, can be found in Me/We Okay, Gray by Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila, who currently has work on display at the Venice Biennale. Breakdance by German artist Martin Brand is a film created after days of filming at a fairground. Brand has a strong interest in youth culture and the behavior of teenagers and adolescents.

Breakdance portrays the lives of young people from a subjective perspective, revealing a world governed by its own rules and laws. The soundtrack highlights the less innocent and sometimes very violent side of youth culture. A short film titled Karaoke by the young Laura d’Ors Vilarderbo, nominated for the TENT Academy Awards, will also be screened. In this film, a chance invitation turns into a party. Another nominee for the TENT Academy Awards 2005 is Sjoerd Vink, whose work Human Nature reveals the true nature of humankind in just a few minutes.

Finally, Secrets and Shadows by George Olsen will be shown. The film won first prize in the No-Budget Competition at the Hamburg Short Film Festival 2005. Through conversations with people from former East and West Germany, Olsen discovered significant differences in how they looked back on the period when the country was still divided. These conversations formed the inspiration for Secrets and Shadows. And of course, many more wonderful films will be screened.

27th August

On August 27, the program features Spezialized Technicians Required: Being Luis Porcar by Spanish artist Manuel Saiz. In an ironic reference to the film Being John Malkovich, Saiz’s video shows John Malkovich stepping into the role of a Spanish actor. Manuel Saiz will be present at the screening and will also talk about his new project, VideoDictionary.

At his request, various internationally renowned artists and filmmakers create short video works in which each concept is given a visual definition. The resulting collection of short works can be considered a “video dictionary.” This project will become part of the Impakt Festival 2005 (December 7–11) in the form of a video library. Through a brief presentation at the AV-BBQ, we will give a preview of this program from the Impakt Festival 2005. Finally, we will also show Videohacking by Saiz, an earlier work that has now become a classic. In the video, a masked activist manipulates film history to his own ends.

Counter by German artist Volker Schreiner is another example of reusing Hollywood films. Using a formal concept in which the count runs down from 266 to 1, he draws attention to visual details that would normally escape notice. Ocean, Act 1 is the final episode of the Wonder Showzen series by the now infamous PFFR collective from New York.

Four homeless Vietnam veterans carry out a heroic action, while a news anchor is killed by violent statistics. In Monitoring the Dordtselaan for Maximum Peace of Mind by Klaas van Gorkum and Iratxe Jaio, Orwell’s Big Brother manifests in Rotterdam. The drive for control and security seems to escalate into a circus of surveillance footage, scanner traffic, camera crews, and uniformed police. Both Klaas van Gorkum and Iratxe Jaio will be present at the screening.
