Mark Lewis

1 November 2007
19:30

Location: Filmtheater t’Hoogt
Ticket price: €7

Canadian film artist Mark Lewis values the viewer's mobility. He prefers museum-style exhibitions, where people can stand and move freely. Lewis allows his films to "live" in the same kind of space where paintings and photographs are found. He wants to juxtapose them as equals.
The relationship between the moving image (film) and the still image (photography and painting) is therefore crucial to his work. Lewis believes a film can be picturesque. Experience and time are elements that distinguish film from painting and photography. Therefore, Lewis emphasizes these elements in his films.
Landscapes and the social activities that can take place within them are common subjects. Lewis pays tribute to classic Hollywood film and the avant-garde, but never aligns himself with either genre. By using standard techniques on 35mm film, with the help of professional actors, he aims to pierce right through cinema and show us all its associated clichés. What seems like a coincidence was actually very well thought out beforehand.

Mark Lewis will be interviewed this evening by Jelle Bouwhis (Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam).
