Part of I AM NOT AN ORACLE

Jacob’s Pillow

Folkert de Jong (2023)

The 2014 artwork Jacob’s Pillow is based on the coronation chair of the English Royal Family. Commissioned by Edward I in 1300, the original chair houses the Stone of Scone — a flat stone that, according to mythology, is the sacred stone mentioned in the Old Testament as “Jacob’s Pillow” and is believed to possess divine powers.

Folkert de Jong is fascinated by this story, in which a chair becomes a mystical portal to the past and continues to play a ritual role in the coronations of the English Royal Family today.

The original chair is entirely covered in graffiti, engraved over seven centuries by young choirboys who secretly scratched their marks into it. By recreating the chair from inexpensive hardware-store wood and covering it with contemporary spray-paint graffiti, the artist questions the intrinsic meaning of objects, as well as notions of ownership, consent, and the legitimization of violence and power under religious motives — often at the expense of others.

The defacing of the chair by generations of choirboys can be seen as a modest act of resistance against the established order of church and monarchy, and as evidence that each new generation seeks to define its own rules.
