Part of THE CAKE IS A LIEARMOR
Kubra Khademi
In 2015, Afghani artist Kubra Khademi walked through a busy area in central Kabul dressed in custom-made metal armour. In this extremely conservative country, where women are expected to cover their bodies completely, Khademi wore a steel armour that accentuated her breasts, belly, crotch and bottom. The aim of this artistic gesture was to highlight how women in Afghanistan are restricted and sexually and verbally harassed in public spaces. Following this controversial performance, which lasted only eight minutes, the artist faced overwhelming expressions of hatred and violence, causing her to leave the country.
