The Chinese/American duo FM3 is making waves with the Buddha Machine: a portable audio device with a volume knob and nine ambient loops to choose from. That’s it. Essentially, the Buddha Machine is a pocket radio permanently tuned to FM3, your own personal portable mantra. But this anti-iPod has proven to be an irresistible toy, selling by the hundreds every day. Several celebrities have declared themselves fans: Brian Eno, for example, was the first to buy the complete six-piece set. The Buddha Machine even made it into the New York Times’ top 10 CD releases of 2005. At this Impakt Event, FM3 will perform a Buddha Battle, a concert in which the six Buddha Machines compete against each other.
