Foreigners Out! Schlingensiefs Container
Austria 2002, 90:00 minutes
Christoph Schlingensief is an artist-provocateur. This German national staged an incredibly controversial and revealing intervention in Austria in 2000, when Jörg Haider’s FPÖ had become the first extreme right-wing party to enter government since WWII. Schlingensief responded to their racist views and policies by staging a ‘concentration camp reality show’ in the tourist centre of Vienna.
The artist was encouraged and surprised by the responses to his satirical take on xenophobia, Big-Brother-games and new nationalism. It sparked heated political debates, open hostilities, loud demonstrations and constant attacks from right-wing and left-wing groups. As part of the same project, almost a million people voted in an online poll on whether to allow asylum seekers to stay in Austria.
This documentary of Schlingensiefs project was directed by Paul Poet.
