Die unheimlichen Frauen
Germany 1992, 63:00 minutes
Since the beginning of time women have also been perpetrators. They were as courageous and brave as men. They can be equally brutal and criminal and of course just as horny. Nevertheless, to this day, there exists the feminine ideal of ‘non aggressiveness – peacefulness – asexuality’ with which women have been suppressed for centuries. This film shows women as soldiers, partisans, watchmen, criminals as well as child-bearing, drunk, masturbating, strong females but also as circumcised, dismembered victims, who thus must pay for the fear that women cause within men. Scenes from old and recent documentaries, from trivial films and Hein’s own stage sequences are mounted to a collage of images. As are the sounds, collaged out of quotes and her own texts. The film is preceded by a short film by Birgit Heins fellow feminist filmmaker Mara Mattuschka.
Please note that this film contains graphic images of genital mutilation, explicit sexual acts and violence. Some viewers might find this content disturbing.
