Cobra Mist by Emily Richardson

Emily Richardson (UK, 2008, video, 06:54)

Cobra Mist situates the landscape of Orford Ness in Suffolk as a site where rural stillness coexists with the residues of Cold War military experimentation. Through a pivoting camera, time-lapse photography, and wide, contemplative tableaux, the film blurs pastoral England with the stark architecture of former radar tests and the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. The soundtrack shifts between birdsong and industrial noise and serves to intensify a mood of latent unease. Cutting between stillness and implied activity, the film renders history as a suspended disturbance within the present, inviting the viewer’s gaze to wander across a landscape charged with unresolved temporal echoes.
