I Love

Ben Judd (UK, 2003, video, 07:15)

“I Love”  explores a sequence of vulnerable, warm love declarations in which the narrator confesses what he loves about the subjects,  whether it be their small gestures, tones of voice, or ways of moving and acting. Each declaration is complete and sincere, yet the love it articulates remains unreturned and suspended in the distance between speaker and subject. As the statements accumulate, affection becomes rhythmic and almost hypnotic, hovering between sincerity and performance. The film lingers in this interval, where intimacy is passionately expressed but never reassured by reciprocity. What lingers is the warmth and vulnerability of desire and affection, showing the possibility for love to persist and reverberate even when unrequited.
