Secret Machine by Reynold Reynolds
Secret Machine follows within the selection as it is a movie about the examination of time in relation to being, within the context of Muybridge’s motion studies. The same person undergoes the same experiments, yet variations in outcome are created. It suggests that repetition creates variation, and that clocking time—the mechanism that captures time—does not predict the outcomes of experiments or experiences, but rather forms a guiding indicator whose meaning has not yet been defined. This coincides with the idea that a sense of belonging is not created through development, but may instead alienate one from a sense of self. Additionally, the jittery quality of the image makes the movie seem unstable. In Secret Machine different filming techniques are compared to the motion of the body. The film camera becomes another measurement tool in a way a video camera cannot. The intention was to make an art piece from the point of view of a machine, specifically a camera.
