Walking Up and Down to a Woman I once had a Crush on by Feiko Beckers

Feiko Beckers (The Netherlands, 2009, video, 06:28)

This film by Feiko Beckers displays a male figure who, as the title states, has a crush on a woman in the corner of the room. A variety of walking patterns are rolled out that the man must follow in the room. The pattern that has to be followed in the room, and the attraction to the woman he loves, can be read as the psychological space in which the sense of self within late virtual capitalism seems to be free, but is constantly saturated by images of desire. These images make choices in relation to the creation of the self-image highly manipulated, and render a sense of reality illusory. Pre determined trajectories that you are forced to walk through the movements towards finding a partner challenge the notion of self. The space in which the artist moves is a room without any decoration besides the carpet he rolls out which is like a liminal space. Liminal space itself is suggestive of a transitionary moment in which the main character can change or the feasibility of changing something.
