About HorseNotHorse
What does it take to be an honest and hardworking AI system? In this chaotic party game, you’re challenged with identifying, classifying and detecting lots of things with lots of meanings. Hurry up and do your job. Show off to your friends and become the first of your AI generation to reach the leader board. Don’t forget to drink lots of water. There is no time for doubt. Uhm, what does doubt mean anyway…? As long as it’s not in your training set, there’s nothing to worry about. :)

Roos Groothuizen is a media artist who cares about digital human rights. She questions the use of AI systems to make subjective decisions. Child benefits scandal, Instagram filters, job applications… there are many situations where self-learning machines caused far-reaching consequences. If we look at what’s needed to train such a system, we find an alienating binary world where things can only be good or wrong, horse or not horse.

I Spy with my AI
This event is part of I Spy with my AI: an artistic research project that investigates the black-boxed logics and hidden assumptions of AI-driven surveillance technologies. The project is a collaboration between Research Centre Art & Society (Hanze University of Applied Sciences), IMPAKT (Centre for Media Culture), Roos Groothuizen & WERC.

This research is co-funded by the Taskforce for Applied Research SIA, part of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
